The Homeless - A Disappearing Issue
Not so long ago, the plight of the homeless was the one poverty issue that united Americans in compassionate action. Regardless of politics-in fact outside of political discussion-Americans universally were moved to do something about the homeless, especially homeless mothers and children. But compassion fatigue seems to have set it.

In 1990, the Washington Post ran 149 stories on the homeless. In 1995, it ran only 45 stories on homelessness. Last year, that number dropped to 17 and evidently the homeless are about to become invisible to the media and the American conscience.
