Professional football player Tre Boston of the Los Angeles Chargers says that divine intervention guided his free agency decision this off-season. Shortly after the Carolina Panthers released Boston, he found himself torn between joining the Buffalo Bills or the Chargers. Announcing his signing with Los Angeles, he tweeted, “I prayed to God over and over for clarity and God told me over and over again. LA!” It was after Boston gave a man and his children $20 that he felt God made the decision clear to him. “At the end of the day God told me to come here. And I’m a man of faith, so I couldn’t go against his word.”

The sign came at an unexpected place: a gas station. Boston said, “After I pump my gas, there’s a guy with three kids and he asked me for a little bit of change. I gave him $20. So he tells me ‘thank you so much,’ and that God put me in his life ‘for a reason.’ And in my mind I’m saying ‘you’re here for a reason, too.’ Should I ask him, ‘L.A. or Buffalo?’ And before I could ask him, my man told me, ‘There aren’t too many people like you in this world, God’s children. My name’s Mike Daniels, but people call me L.A.’ ”

Already moved by the man’s words, Boston glanced up to see an advertisement reading “Jesus Saves.” That’s when he knew he should join the Chargers. He started crying and talked to the man for 30 minutes. “I ended up giving him $100” he added, “because I knew he changed my life. Honestly, that’s the reason why I’m here (in Los Angeles). It didn’t matter how much money was given to me. It didn’t matter really who was on the team. God told me to come here, and that’s my testimony. That’s why I’m here.”1

Whether or not you buy the notion that God told Tre Boston to join the L.A. Chargers through a down-on-their-luck family and a billboard, you can’t question his simple, sincere faith. Our lesson this week charges us to “Be Who You Are.” Live a new life based on the reality that you are a new creation in Christ, cleansed from sin and connected to His divine nature.

2 Peter 1:1 talks about our “precious faith” (KJV). A precious faith is a faith that guides us in every aspect of life, including our decisions, both great and small. This faith helps us not only behave as new creatures in Christ, but more importantly to be new creatures in Christ. When we become new creatures—Christ’s possessions through and through—then being ourselves means being like Christ. We do God’s will because that’s who we are: God’s people of faith. It can even mean taking cues from God in some of the most unlikely circumstances.
