Bono Can Help Your Ministry
The rock group U2 is one of the most interesting expressions of Christian faith in popular culture today. An excellent collection of nearly 30 sermons--most by 30-something preachers--using lyrics or actual plays from U2 albums has been published. “Get Up Off Your Knees: Preaching the U2 Catalog” is an excellent demonstration of how a new generation of pastors is using their cultural context to share the ageless faith of Jesus Christ. It was edited by two Episcopal priests, both women, one from the suburbs of Philadelphia and the other from the Boston area. One of the two, Beth Maynard, has been recognized from her work with Gathering the neXt Generation, the Episcopal Church network for postmodern ministry. Perhaps the most useful tool in the U2 Catalog is an appendix that contains a detailed outline of a six-week adult spiritual formation workshop which features listening to U2 cuts, viewing U2 concerts on DVD and discussion questions in breakout groups as well as the entire group. If you are ministering with the GenX and Millennial generations, this is a must for your toolbox!
