No Fear, Really?
We sat across the table from each other at the camp meeting cafeteria where I was speaking recently. We had just gotten acquainted. So to make conversation while we were eating I asked, “Why are the security personnel at this Christian camp rented by the Adventists packin’ heat?” His quick reply surprised me. “I’m carrying a concealed weapon on me right now. It’s a crazy world out there. You always have to be ready to defend yourself.” “But right here at camp meeting?” I countered. “Oh yeah!!!” he stated emphatically.
And that got to me thinking (combined with the fact that gun ammunition virtually vanished from store shelves last November shortly after the elections and is still in short supply) why the American people (people of faith) and especially Adventists are so fearful? Haven’t they read “God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him…. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.” (1 John 4:16, 18). Don’t they believe it?
I’m impressed with the article written by one of our Board Members and Senior Consultants, Ryan Bell, on this very topic. I would urge you to read it:
Fear, Freedom and the Problem with Certainty.
