Creative Camp Meeting
“I would like to invite you to join us for Camp Meeting at Sea.” This is how the letter started that just arrived in our Center’s mail box this week. The brochure listed excellent speakers and a variety of musicians presenting multiple styles of music. Unlike other camp meetings, this one is aboard a cruise ship that makes its way from Fort Lauderdale FL through the Panama Canal over 10 days. My purpose is not to be a part of the promotions team for this event happening later this year. But what I want to point out is the ministry innovation. Expecting people to get excited about the old tents, dusty roads and un-airconditioned pavilions is becoming less and less realistic. Finding new ways to attract (and re-attract) people to spiritual community and deepened faith is essential to keeping new generations engaged in Adventism. A seminar speaker once made this shocking statement, “If your congregation is not innovating somewhere, it’s dying.” So what are you trying to do in a new way at your church, conference or union territory? I’d like to hear about it.
